Archie Garth
Archie’s love of birds began when he was very young. He was the child who stopped to watch every movement in the hedgerow, who learned bird calls before he learned times tables, and who could identify species long before most people noticed they were even there. As he grew older, that early fascination deepened — especially when he had the chance to spend time with birds of prey and learn about their senses, adaptations, and behaviour.
Everything changed a little over three years ago, when Archie began his Duke of Edinburgh Award. Looking for a meaningful way to volunteer, he joined the local eco group and picked up the family’s old SLR camera. That moment sparked something — a blend of curiosity, creativity, and connection — and it became the beginning of his journey into wildlife photography.
For his DofE project, Archie designed an initiative to bring more birdlife into the village and raise awareness about bird‑feeder hygiene. With support from the eco group, he installed feeders in communal areas, maintained them, photographed the visiting birds, and encouraged neighbours to share what they saw. The whole village joined in, and the project became a small but joyful community success. That same year, Archie created his first wildlife calendar — a tradition he has continued annually, selecting his best images from each season.
Archie isn't just dedicated, instinctive, and endlessly curious about birds and wildlife, he is whole heartedly passionate. This is his calling. He spends countless hours outdoors, often from dawn until dusk, travelling to wetlands, woodlands, coastlines, and reserves in search of the perfect moment. His fieldcraft is excellent, shaped by patience, respect, and a deep understanding of animal behaviour. He has built friendships with photographers, birders, and conservationists across the region and beyond, always eager to learn and share knowledge. He is also a proud member of the RSPB.
His work has been recognised locally, winning Junior Photographer of the Year twice with Dorset Wildlife Trust, as well as receiving a Wild About Devon Award. In 2025, he fulfilled a long‑held dream by travelling to the Isle of Mull — an experience that shaped many of the images in his calendar that year.
Archie recently completed his GCSEs and is now studying for a UAL Photography Diploma at Exeter College, focusing on developing his technical skills, creative voice, and understanding of visual storytelling. His ambition is to become a professional wildlife photographer and cameraman, inspired by respected role models in wildlife filmmaking, such as Hamza Yassin.
Locally, Archie’s favourite place is Seaton Wetlands — a reserve with a special place in our hearts, that feels like a second home. He hopes to guide, volunteer, and perhaps work there in the future, sharing his knowledge and passion with others.
Archie’s photography also plays a magical role in the world of 'Mim and the Tiny Tails of Acorn Hollow'. Through his lens, Sara’s sculpted characters are brought to life in tender, softly lit images that capture the quiet wonder and everyday magic of their woodland world.
If you love nature, wildlife, and the creative world Sara and Archie are building together, you’re warmly invited to follow Archie’s journey on Instagram and support his growing portfolio.
Thanks for your support.
